Frequently Asked Questions

What is cottage food law and does it apply to me?
Cottage food laws allow home bakers to sell certain food products made in their home kitchen without needing a commercial kitchen license. Every state has different rules about which foods are allowed, how much you can earn, and where you can sell. Check our State-by-State Cottage Food Laws Directory to see exactly what’s legal in your state.
How do I price my baked goods correctly?
The right price covers your ingredients, packaging, labor (your time!), overhead, and a profit margin. Most home bakers undercharge because they don’t include all of these costs. Start with our free Sweet Start Pricing Kit or use the Cake Pricing Calculator to run your real numbers in minutes.
Do I need a business license to sell baked goods from home?
It depends on your state and local municipality. Most states require at minimum a business registration, and some require a food handler’s permit or cottage food permit. Download the free Legal Checklist for Bakers which walks through every requirement you need to check before you start selling.
What’s the difference between a cottage food business and a licensed bakery?
A cottage food business operates from your home kitchen under your state’s cottage food laws — typically with limits on income, allowed food types, and sales channels. A licensed bakery operates from a commercial or licensed kitchen with no such restrictions. Most home bakers start under cottage food laws and scale from there. Our blog covers this in detail.
Do I need business insurance as a home baker?
Yes — home baker’s insurance (often called home-based business insurance or food liability insurance) is strongly recommended even if your state doesn’t require it. Your homeowner’s policy almost certainly won’t cover business-related claims. Read our full guide on insurance for home bakers to understand what coverage you need.
How do I find my first customers?
Most home bakers get their first customers through their existing network — friends, family, neighbors, local Facebook groups, and Instagram. Download the free Social Media Guide for Bakers and the Mini Marketing Guide for a step-by-step approach to getting your first sales without a big budget.
