The Order Math: Do the Numbers Work?

📺 Watch First: Before diving into this lesson, make sure you’ve watched Episode 1 on our YouTube channel — the video is in the free preview lesson above. This lesson picks up right where the YouTube video leaves off and goes much deeper. Come back here after you’ve watched it.

Why Your “Why” Changes Every Decision You Make

The bakers who burn out fastest are not the ones who couldn’t bake. They’re the ones who never got clear on what they actually wanted the business to do for them. When it got hard — and it always gets hard — they didn’t have an anchor.

Here’s what a real “why” looks like:

  • “I want $500 a month so I can pay my car payment without touching my paycheck.” That’s specific and testable. Every decision — how many orders, what to charge, how much to invest — can be tested against that number.
  • “I want creative work that is mine. I gave 20 years to a job that owned me.” That tells you something different — profitability might matter less than creative control. You might turn down orders that don’t excite you.

Neither is wrong. But they lead to very different businesses. Your why is also what gets you out of bed at 2am when you’re finishing a tiered cake that has to be delivered at 9am.

The Order Math

The income goal section of your binder has a column most people skip: the order math. This is where the goal becomes real.

Let’s say your goal is $800 a month.

At an average order of $60 — reasonable for a batch of custom cookies or a small cake — that’s about 14 orders a month. Roughly 3–4 orders a week.

Now ask yourself: Do you have 3–4 weekends a month where you could bake? Do you have time during the week for pickups, customer messages, packaging? Does 14 orders feel manageable or overwhelming?

If $800 at $60 per order feels like too much, there are two levers: raise your prices or lower your goal. We cover pricing in depth in Phase 2. For now, run the math on your actual goal and make sure it connects to something real.
