Building Your Email List from Day One

Your Email List Is More Valuable Than Your Follower Count

Social media is borrowed land. Instagram can change its algorithm tomorrow and cut your reach in half. A platform can suspend your account. If that happens, you lose access to every follower you ever built — overnight.

Your email list is yours. Nobody can take it. And the people who give you their email address are telling you something a follower doesn’t: they trust you enough to invite you directly into their inbox.

Ten email subscribers are more valuable than 500 followers. They chose you on purpose.

Start During the Waiting Period

Don’t wait until your permit arrives. Don’t wait until you have something to sell. Start collecting email addresses now, during the waiting period, so you have a list ready when you launch.

Free Platforms to Start With

  • Mailchimp (mailchimp.com) — free up to 500 contacts. Drag-and-drop email builder. Easy to get started with no technical knowledge.
  • MailerLite (mailerlite.com) — free up to 1,000 contacts. Cleaner interface, slightly more flexibility. Many small businesses prefer it for the higher free tier limit.

Pick one and open your account this week. Do not overthink this — both are excellent. The one you use is better than the one you’re still comparing.

What to Ask For

First name and email address. That’s it. Every additional field you add reduces the number of people who sign up. Keep the barrier as low as possible.

How to Get Your First Subscribers

  • Social media bio link: “Get first access to my launch → [your sign-up link]”
  • At soft launch orders: “Can I add you to my list for when I have new flavors and availability?” Almost everyone says yes.
  • At your first farmers market table: A simple card or sign: “Join my list — new flavors and market dates.” Or a QR code that links to your sign-up form.
  • Offer something in exchange: A free recipe card, a small discount on a future order, first access to new items. Even a small incentive doubles sign-up rates.

What to Send

You don’t need to email constantly. Even once a month keeps you in front of your list. Ideas:

  • New flavors or seasonal items available
  • Upcoming farmers market dates
  • A simple recipe or baking tip
  • Behind-the-scenes from your kitchen
  • First access to holiday pre-orders

When you have availability, your email list is where you announce it first. Before Instagram. Before Facebook. Those people open your emails because they asked to hear from you.

Goal before launch day: 10 email subscribers. That number is achievable in the waiting period. Start now.
